Election Fears and Family Safety: Why I Finally Bought a Gun

How one progressive reconciled 2A rights with a deep commitment to inclusivity and responsibility

If someone had told me a few years ago that I’d be writing a post about buying a gun, I would have laughed.

For a long time, I was firmly anti-gun. But in the lead-up to the 2024 election, I started paying more attention to the political climate, especially the threats aimed at LGBTQIA+ folks—people I love and want to protect.

Hearing talk of certain agendas and knowing what I know about potential plans like Project 2025 pushed me to take action.

I realized I didn’t want to be caught off-guard if my loved ones faced real danger. While I’ve never been interested in a fight, I believe in being prepared.

I’ll be honest—part of me hesitated to write this piece.

Buying a gun wasn’t something I’d ever pictured myself doing, and talking about it publicly felt intimidating.

But over the past few months, it’s been on my mind constantly, and I realized I couldn’t keep these thoughts to myself.

By sharing my personal journey and the reasons behind my decision, I hope to offer a new perspective and perhaps help someone else who’s wrestling with the same questions.

The Shifting Political Landscape

This election felt different to me, especially with an incoming Trump administration.

I’ve read enough history to know that when authoritarian or fascist-leaning regimes come to power, they often target specific groups and try to limit citizens’ ability to defend themselves.

The idea of not having the means to protect my family started weighing on me.

Part of me said, “Stay anti-gun,” but the other part warned that burying my head in the sand could leave us vulnerable.

From Anti-Gun to Pro-Preparedness

Because I’d been anti-gun for so long, switching my mindset didn’t happen overnight. Initially, it was emotional. I was scared for the safety of those I love.

But fear alone wasn’t enough to convince me—I needed facts. So, I did my homework.

I watched countless YouTube videos for first-time gun owners, read up on the laws in my state, and pored over resources like the USCCA guides (you can check out my affiliate link here: USCCA Referral).

The more I learned, the more I saw that owning a gun can be done responsibly if you’re willing to make safety your top priority.

Balancing Progressive Values and the Second Amendment

Yes, I’m a proud Progressive. And yes, I strongly believe in the Second Amendment. Some people say you can’t be both, but I disagree.

You can support common-sense gun laws—like background checks and training requirements—while still exercising your right to own a firearm.

It’s not an all-or-nothing situation. We can be nuanced: We can value safety, community well-being, and freedom all at the same time.

Safety First (Especially with Kids)

To me, the biggest part of being a responsible gun owner is taking every safety precaution possible.

I bought trigger locks and a secure safe, making sure only I can access my firearms quickly if needed.

I also believe in talking openly with kids about guns.

In my house, there are clear boundaries and consequences. If you’re a parent, make sure you’re using age-appropriate language and resources.

A conversation with a teenager looks a lot different than one with a seven-year-old, and sometimes you might decide a younger child is not ready to know details.

The key is taking ownership of that decision and protecting them at all costs.

Training and Ongoing Practice

Having a firearm is not enough—you need to know how to use it responsibly. That’s why I’ve spent more on training than on my actual gun.

Me at the gun range for training

I’m a member of a local range where I practice regularly and learn from professionals.

Firearm laws vary by state (and sometimes even by city), so it’s worth brushing up not just on your local regulations but also on those in any state you might visit.

Mistakes can be life-altering, so continuous learning and practice are essential.

Looking Ahead

I hope I never have to use my gun for self-defense. Fighting really is the last resort.

But I’m not willing to gamble on the safety of my family if things in our country take a turn for the worse.

I’ll always prefer a peaceful resolution over confrontation, yet I can’t ignore the possibility that being prepared could save lives.

If you find yourself in a similar position—especially if you’re Progressive-leaning and have hesitations—do your research.

Think carefully about whether this is right for you. And if you decide to purchase a firearm, treat safety and training as non-negotiable.

Final Thoughts

Gun ownership is a personal decision, influenced by everything from politics to personal values.

My biggest advice is to weigh your options carefully, stay informed about what’s happening in our country, and respect the responsibility that comes with a weapon.

If you keep your family’s well-being at the forefront, you’ll make choices that feel right for you.
